#MyRightMyDecision

On March 4, Derenda Hancock and Kim Gibson were in Washington DC representing We Engage & Pinkhouse Defenders at the Center for Reproductive Rights' MyRightMyDecision Rally - DC. We were honored to stand with Abortion Access Front, Feminist Flag Corps, and all of the other groups fighting for our rights.

Standing in front of SCOTUS, it becomes very real that the people in that building have the absolute power to strip you of your bodily autonomy in the next 3 months.

Amnesty International makes it clear, “Any person who does not control what happens to their body cannot be free…At the core of the issue are reproductive freedom and a person’s right to make decisions about what happens to their body.”

If your body is no longer under your control, if you can't decide what happens to your body, what happens if someone needs a kidney, or they will die? Can the state demand you donate one? It's not that far of a stretch...

Blair Imani, ambassador of Muslims for Progressive Values, and one of the many great speakers of the event made it clear – “So long as the right to safe and legal abortion is on the line, none of us are free.” None of us.

“Patriarchal right-wing Christians are trying to legislate our rights to our bodies. We will not allow interpretations of religious doctrine to send us back to the 1500s,” said Imani. We see this happening in Mississippi, we see it in Oklahoma, we see it across America.

This decision is about so much more than abortion - which right will they decide to take next? The right to drive a car, to further our education, to wear makeup? Today it’s abortion, tomorrow, who knows?

“So long as the right to safe and legal abortion is on the line, none of us are free.”
